COMMENT: An Extraordinary Man.
Dear A-Letter Reader:
You may not have heard of Bob Kephart, but Bob is the reason you're reading The A-Letter. This was his idea. He's also the reason there is a Sovereign Society. That was his dream and he made it a reality.
Bob passed away recently after a long, courageous struggle with a difficult illness. Last Saturday I was honored to speak at his memorial service.
I knew Bob for 45 years, from the time we were neighbors on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. He went on to own Human Events magazine, then become a leading pioneer in the investment newsletter business. His success allowed him to pursue and promote his libertarian beliefs in the publishing world, where he had a large impact, and beyond.
More important were his untold good works for so many people; he anonymously paid medical bills for those who had no funds; he hired attorneys for persons he felt wrongly imprisoned; he encouraged and promoted young writers and others in whom he saw potential, even when others saw only problems. And he gave generously to causes and people in whom he had faith, often those in trouble.
He was my very good friend, a man of strong opinions strongly expressed. Bob gave me a second chance at life when I was at a low point. Even while ill, he carried on his manifold interests with the Sovereign Society and in the larger battle for individual liberty everywhere.
It's been said: "Death is more universal than life; everyone dies but not everyone lives." Bob lived. He loved life and pursued art, painting, sailing, jogging, travel with gusto. He liked nothing better than a raucous debate on political or economic issues over a meal with wine.
Bob Kephart's light burned with a luminous incandescence in this all too dark world. A just God must reward humans such as he. The memory of Bob and his good works will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him -- a fitting memorial for an extraordinary man.
On behalf of Jack Pugsley, chairman of the Sovereign Society, our executive director, Erika Nolan, and our staff, we extend our condolences to Janet Kephart and the Kephart family.
