COMMENT: Pages from History.
Dear A-Letter Reader:
The late Maurice Chevalier, the famous French singer and movie star (whom I saw on his US farewell tour) was asked on his 72nd birthday how he felt. His reply: "Considering the alternative, it's not too bad at all."
I haven't reached Maurice's ripe old age yet and have a way to go before I do, but last week in Washington, DC, I did attend the 50th anniversary reunion of my Capitol Page School graduating class.
As a 15-year-old student from the Eastern Shore of Maryland in January 1953, I was honored to be named a page in the US House of Representatives by the late US Rep. Ted Miller (R-Md). I served as a House page for three years. I attended the Capitol Page School located on the top floor of the Library of Congress just across the Plaza from the US Capitol where I worked every day and graduated in 1955, going on to Foreign Service School and law school at Georgetown University.
Of the relatively small number of former pages, four of us went on to be elected to the US House, and one still serves there, Paul Kajourski (D-Pa). He spoke at the reunion and made some valid points, especially about how the tone and content of public discourse has changed for the worse over the 50 years since we served as pages.
There is in Congress, and America politics as a whole, a rancour and bitterness that stands in the way of reasonable compromise and needed solutions to our problems. Even as I write this, the radio is reporting that John Kerry has called the President a liar and the President is attacking the senator.
My problem is that, after service in the Maryland State Senate and the US House, and in many party posts, I know too much about politics. I see the daily political posturing and smoke blowing for what it is. I know how the game is played and I know that too often good ends are said to justify bad means. But they don't.
I still live in the hope that America will survive, but with the national landscape populated with the bunch of moral and political pygmies that afflict us now, I sometimes wonder if we can keep the Republic the Founders gave us and for which so many have died.
That's the way that it looks from here.
BOB BAUMAN, Editor.

ADVERTISEMENT: "WE NEED TO TALK PRIVATELY..."
That's what Mark Cohen said to his tennis opponent after a match in Hollywood, Florida. Back in his hotel room, Cohen pulled $10,000 from a suitcase and gave it to the stranger, who helped him make as much as 3,057% over the next two years.
How did they do it...and how can you do the same today?
Two years ago this investment would have landed you in jail. Now it's a great way legally to make a fortune. Detailed report at:
