COMMENT: Bush Win Helps Offshore.
Dear A-Letter Reader:
A few days ago, after standing in line for two hours in order to vote early where I live in south Florida, you may recall that I shared with you my impression that there was "definitely something going on in America, and as an ex-politician myself, I have rarely seen the likes of it. It's a deep current of feeling that I encountered first hand."
Well, Senator John Kerry may well feel that it was an earthquake of sorts -- and it ended his presidential ambitions, confirming President George Bush in a second term. The huge voter turnout at the polls did cause a shaking of the American political earth, and the shock wave destroyed the hopes of leftist and liberals who were smugly certain of victory.
I voted for Bush -- without any enthusiasm and with a great deal of concern about what he may do in a second term. But, as did many Americans, I had to balance my fears against the repeated attacks by Kerry on the principles we at the Sovereign Society cherish and promote -- economic liberty, personal and financial privacy, access to global investments and freedom to travel and transfer capital in a free market world.
The fact that Kerry made the offshore financial world one of his major campaign punching bags, repeatedly attacking places such as Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, was a measure of the man. Much of what he said about the offshore world, he must have known as an intelligent person, was pure garbage, unsupported by facts, but designed to whip up prejudices against people of wealth and the business sector. That the US stock market zoomed upward the day after the election can be read as a free market reaction to removal of a perceived threat.
Those of us who consider ourselves conservatives can only hope that President Bush will redirect his policies now to; 1) drastically cut the US budget deficit and reduce the national debt; 2) realistically reform the worst aspects of the PATRIOT Act; 3) uphold the rights of legitimate tax havens and world tax competition; and, 4) as he pledged in his victory statement, support drastic reform, even repeal, of the US Internal Revenue Code as we now know it. And while he's at it, he might consider a strategic, early end to the war in Iraq.
With increased majorities in the US Congress, the President has a chance, at least for a while, to push through major changes. But in doing so he needs to show a far better understanding of the meaning of history and the principles of constitutional freedom.
That's the way that it looks from here.
BOB BAUMAN, Editor
