COMMENT: An Unprintable Ubiquity - On B.S.

Dear A-Letter Reader:

Many years ago when I was a callow freshman in night classes at the Foreign Service School at Georgetown U. in Washington, DC, among my very first 'required' courses were: 1) Logic: where we studied the principles of how the mind reasons, (or should reason). Prof. Mann tried to drum into us how to think logically. 2) Epistemology: Rev. Fr. Bradley attempted to explain the branch of philosophy that studies the nature of knowledge and its foundations. In other words, what is the extent and validity of knowledge. What should you believe? What is truth?

Stay with me now -- and fast forward to 2005.
Harry G. Frankfurt, 76, is a moral philosopher of world repute and professor emeritus at Princeton. He authored a book recently put out by Princeton U. Press that's a first for that distinguished publisher; a book with a title most publications, including us, find unfit to print. The book is called "On Bull----." (BS is the popular abbreviation).

The web dictionary I use defines BS as 'vulgar slang' for spoken words that are foolish, deceitful, or boastful, worthless, deceptive, or insincere, idle conversation. But the most common sub-definition of BS is "to attempt to mislead or deceive by talking nonsense." And that's why the professor wrote his book. He sees (and I agree) modern society awash in BS, flowing from its politicians, its so-called leaders, its TV and news media. We all know it, but no one really confronts this nonsense.
Think about what we see and hear all day; weapons of mass destruction, the war on drugs, Social Security reform, smaller government, more freedom, balance the budget, winning in Iraq, reform of the PATRIOT Act would help terrorists, security requires less liberty.

When you think about it, official BS was integral to "Nineteen Eighty Four," George Orwell's 1949 vision of a totalitarian society where people are kept in line with the warning: "Big Brother is watching you" and by orders that everyone must accept the BS that 2 2=5 and that "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength."

The professor says that an advertiser, politician or talk show host given to BS "does not reject the authority of truth, as the liar does ...he pays no attention to it at all." What bothers Prof. Frankfurt (and me) is that BS is potentially more harmful than lies, because a culture and country that accepts BS is in real danger of rejecting "the possibility of knowing how things truly are." Isn't that us?
Well, on this page, and at the Sovereign Society, in our publications and reports, we don't deal in BS. We fact-check each statement or claim, and we back it up. We label opinion as such. We warn you that what sounds too good to be true is so; that you can't always earn 20% returns a month, that you can't end most US taxes by going offshore, that a fake passport will land you in jail, that the Web and the world are full of offshore fraudsters ready to take your cash and run.So recognize all the BS for what it is. Put that aside and use your own sound reasoning to discover true knowledge. We'll help you do it.Join us. That's why we're here.
That's the way that it looks from here.
BOB BAUMAN, Editor

* FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK:
OFFSHORE:
* A VISIT TO HONG KONG
Hong Kong has twice been chosen as one of the five leading tax/asset
protection havens by the Sovereign Society. But what's it like to be
there? An American resident in Japan has lots of surprises after 10
years away returning to this leading Asian financial center.
-----
* ISLE OF MAN LEADS WITH TAX CUTS
DOUGLAS: The island's 2005 budget extends zero taxes from the offshore
sector to other internal areas; it proposes a low maximum tax cap to
attract more high net worth individuals from London and other offshore
tax havens as island residents.
-----
* GUERNSEY EYES FOUNDATIONS LAW
ST. PETER PORT: Island leaders are discussing adoption of a law
authorizing creation of foundation trusts, already available in other
nations, such as Liechtenstein and Panama.
==========================================
WEALTH:
* U.S. TREASURY AGITPROP
"Agtiprop" is a word of Russian derivation meaning "political
propaganda." It describes the unobtrusive insertion of specially
selected words or images in public documents, statements, even movies, plays and literature. Thus it is that UK and US tax collectors a few years ago, in their public remarks, began equating "tax avoidance"
(legal) with "tax evasion" (illegal). Now there's a new US & UK
agitprop pairing: "terrorism" and "money laundering," meaning laws
that abolish all financial privacy are justified because someone,
somewhere, might be using a bank account, trust, foundation, insurance policy or ATM that might relate to "terrorism." So, gladly surrender all your privacy for 'security.'
-----
* IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN - I.R.S. PRESS RELEASES
WASHINGTON: US sues two self-proclaimed 'lawyers' selling tax evasion using fraudulent 'corporation sole' schemes.
-----
* FOREIGN BUYS OF U.S. TREASURIES DROP 75%
WASHINGTON: Purchases by foreigners of US Treasury securities plunged 75% to $8.4 billion from last November.
==========================================
PRIVACY & RIGHTS:
* GARBAGE OUT: GOVERNMENT IN.
LONDON: He foresaw many ways Big Brother might watch us, but Orwell never imagined that government would electronically spy on your trash.
-----
* ARREST ALL THE LAWYERS
NEW YORK: The right to legal counsel of an accused and the confidential attorney-client relationship is at the heart of fairness in the US criminal justice system. A decade ago US Attorneys stopped subpoenaing information in the hands of drug defense attorneys and began raiding their offices, taking files and computers. Then the US began arresting and prosecuting defense lawyers as co-conspirators with their clients. Using PATRIOT Act powers, last week a NYC federal jury convicted a defense attorney of conspiracy to support a terrorist, her client who already was in jail. If you are accused of an 'unpopular' crime (aren't they all?) and you need a good defense attorney, good luck.

ADVERTISEMENT: TREAT HEART TROUBLE WITH SUGAR AND MUSTARD
If you told your doctor he could effectively treat heart trouble,
chronic disease and this type of cancer with...Sugar & Mustard...He'd
say, "Baloney!" But now we have proof, thanks to award winning Jonathan V. Wright, M.D. He braved ridicule and hostility to pioneer a new kind of medicine. While drugs just suppress symptoms, these spectacular new food & vitamin cures can beat your symptoms and cure the causes of chronic diseases.
