     Why Alan Greenspan's Retirement Might Put Yours in Jeopardy

The only thing standing in the way of a complete devaluation of the U.S. dollar is Alan Greenspan...and on January 31, 2006, he retires.

Find out exactly how the combination of 18 years of Greenspan's loose monetary policy, $7.78 trillion US national debt, and the revaluation of China's currency is forming the 'perfect storm' that will destroy the US economy - and the one investment that will keep you afloat when the storm hits...

COMMENT:  Life Without True Liberty.

PATTAYA, THAILAND:
Dear A-Letter Reader:
Notwithstanding the favorable impressions I have gained of Singapore and Thailand and their people in the past week, lurking under the surface of both nations are highly troubling currents of oppression.

In Singapore, the Lee family, father and son, have exercised iron control over politics; elections there are a farce. The last time a major opponent dared run against Lee the younger, now prime minister, he was sued, jailed and harassed into bankruptcy. Not only is it a crime to spit on the streets of Singapore,possibly punishable by beating with a cane, it's an unwritten crime to oppose the regime.

Here in Thailand the government launched an anti-drug campaign last year that makes the futile efforts of the US DEA look like child's play. Alleged drug dealers and distributors here were rounded up by police in a series of raids and a reported 2,500 were summarily executed, shot in the head. The government and military control nearly all the national television networks and operate many of Thailand's radio networks as well as the banks.

As much as we have complained about the PATRIOT Act, relatively speaking, the US obviously is far ahead of Singapore and Thailand when it comes to respect for civil liberties, although we're on the slippery slope towards oppression.

In both Singapore and Thailand economic freedom exists and if you have money, assets and contacts, you can prosper. Singapore is impressive not only for its spotless cleanliness, but for the evident prosperity of its building boom. In Thailand as well, in Bangkok and here in the resort area of Pattaya, the 40-floor condos are going up everywhere, expat money is flowing in, and the world is beating the proverbial path to the Thai door.

But lurking in the near background in both places is the realization that the rule of law is no more than what the government says it is -- not unlike the attitude of the Bush administration back home on too many issues.

Sun, smiles and slogans do not true freedom create. Traveling as I have makes it all the clearer that liberty is a scarce commodity in most of the world -- and increasingly, in America as well.

That's the way that it looks from here in Thailand.
BOB BAUMAN, Editor.

* OFFSHORE CARIBBEAN  SUFFERING

Bad enough that the OECD, FATF and other leftist busybodies are kicking small offshore financial centers. Add now US tourist and passport restrictions, hurricanes and it all gets to be to much.
