COMMENT: Get With the Program
Dear Friend:
A new national poll finds that 54% of Americans favor allowing phone conversations to be monitored, 80% favor allowing video surveillance of public places such as street corners, 67% favor roadblock searches of vehicles, and 67% favor having their mail monitored.
These shortsighted majorities are dead wrong. Whether they lack an understanding of history or are driven by fear, each one should know that, except in extraordinary situations, government should never be allowed to abrogate the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Sovereign Society Council of Experts member, Harry Browne, the Libertarian Party candidate for president (1996 & 2000) this week explained why the Bill of Rights and the rule of law are of such great importance. (See link below).
When I did the same in this space 10 days ago an unhappy reader responded: "We are at war. Some people understand that, others do not. Apparently Bob Bauman does not. Our government's primary responsibility is to keep its citizens safe...Get with the program. If you are not part of the solution (which your editorial is not; it is the type of argumentation that assists our enemies), then you are part of the problem."
My considered reply: "Do you really understand what America, our history, our constitutional system and the Bill of Rights is all about? Do you know what it is that you claim to defend?
"The fact that you accuse me, or anyone who offers valid criticisms of government actions, as 'assisting our enemies' betrays both ignorance and gross intolerance.
"Under our blessed system you have a right to say what you please, a right that I hope is never destroyed by government or by intolerance of others. I have that same right."
While YOU still can, are you exercising your right to speak out?
