Dear A-Letter Reader:

Chet Currier, columnist for Bloomberg News, poses an, (you'll pardon the expression), arresting scenario: 'Imagine how the latest news on random income tax audits would play if the main characters were police rather than the Internal Revenue Service.'

He suggests 'Cops Bring Back Random Home Searches' would be the headline instead of 'IRS Brings Back Random Audits,' the actual Wall Street Journal headline. And he notes that these already discredited IRS audits smack of that politically incorrect sin of 'profiling.' Currier notes: 'Evidently 'profiling' is OK as long as it focuses on economic rather than social or ethnic groups.'

We agree with Currier's view that there is no justification for 'reign-of-terror tactics to enforce an incomprehensible tax system. A free society isn't as free as it should be when individuals must open their checkbooks and filing cabinets at the whim of government authority.' All of which brings us to an extraordinary speech by an extraordinary Member of the US Congress, my former colleague, Hon. Ron Paul (R-Tex). In a June 27 House speech entitled: 'Are We Doomed To Be a Police State?', Ron Paul lays it on the line, at length and in great detail, cataloging the careening anti-liberty path of the Bush administration since the tragic events of last September 11th.

Noting that 'involuntary servitude' was banned by the 13th Amendment, Rep. Paul points out that courts don't apply this prohibition 'to those citizens required to follow the dictates of the IRS... Fear is the tool used to intimidate most Americans to comply to the tax code...' He also decries the wholesale loss of financial and other aspects of privacy: 'All our financial activities are subject to 'legal' searches without warrants and without probable cause.'

Ron Paul says (and we agree): 'When government keeps detailed records on every move we make and we either need advance permission for everything we do or are penalized for not knowing what the rules are, America will be declared a police state.'

As our annual Independence Day approaches, we would all do well to read and ponder what the Texas congressman has said in this blunt speech.
