Dear A-Letter Reader:
Those of you who have read this e-newsletter for any length of time are familiar with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). That's the Paris-based group of tax-free bureaucrats financed by 30 of the world richest industrialized nations, including the US and UK.
For many interested in the offshore financial world, the OECD is known as self-appointed busybodies, brandishing blacklists and demanding high taxes and radical changes in national laws that protect financial privacy.
All of this from an organization that has no standing in law and has no real power, beyond possible collective action by its wealthy, high tax welfare state members.
Now the OECD is expanding its horizons. The new OECD slogan is 'global governance.' Stripped bare of rhetoric, OECD global governance demands that nations surrender their authority to remote OECD experts, unanswerable to any electorate.
In a revealing essay, Eileen Ciesla, fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, summarizes the OECD goals and the dangerous implications for the United States, its citizens and the nation's economy. She also underscores the OECD prejudice in favor the European Union and its demands for high tax uniformity, plus an absolute end to banking secrecy, especially in leading world tax havens such as Switzerland.
Says Ms. Ciesla: 'Sovereignty is at the heart of the ongoing dispute over the OECD's harmful tax competition initiative.' She points out that since 1998, 41 Caribbean and Pacific islands have been the target of the OECD 'harmful tax competition' campaign, threatening unnamed sanctions. Though this high tax push has no basis in law, all but seven countries have agreed to comply, if a 'level playing field' is established worldwide. It's no coincidence that the EU is pushing imposition of a single income tax rate across its borders to stop capital flight within the EU.
But the OECD/EU goals don't stop with uniform high taxes and officials poking into your financial and bank accounts. They want common global laws governing the environment, agriculture, food and chemicals; most all of them curbing free enterprise, and loaded in favor of the social and environmental theories of so-called 'green' parties.
This is an essay worth reading and pondering.
That's the way that it looks from here.
