Dear A-Letter Reader:
Yesterday, in a fit of editor's self pity, I complained about a lack of reader response to the substantive comment and information The A-Letter tries to convey.
One of our 46,000 faithful readers, (that's one who has written to us at least twice), replied that his 'lack of response is due mainly to the documentary nature of the linked content. Since they are mostly to other publications, it seems unfair to vent my spleen on you.'
Right you are, SM, from Florida, don't blame me for reporting the sad state of the nation and world. I just give the news -- in hopes the truth will set us all free.
But then it occurred to me that perhaps our mere reporting the news may, to many, be so paralyzingly depressive, you may be too overwhelmed to send even your gloomy reactions. If the world really is going to Hell in a hand basket, what can one person do about it?
A case in point is an article from The Guardian (UK) yesterday which you'll find in full below. Inspired by an Internet web site, Statewatch, which keeps an eagle eye on the European Union and its machinations, this article explains how the Bush government has been pressuring the EU for almost a year (since 9-11), to conclude a major new treaty between the US and EU member nations.
In a nutshell, (which is where the late Will Rogers said all bad ideas originate), the US and EU in secret are drawing up a treaty with expansive new police powers on issues ranging from extradition, to undercover and joint US-EU police operations, intercepting all sorts of communications and search and seizure of bank & other financial
accounts.
Don't misunderstand; this is NOT limited to fighting terrorism. The Bush folks quietly are promoting a treaty that will cover ALL alleged criminal matters that may arise between the US and EU nations. And it appears that the treaty may jettison the US Constitution, the Bill of Rights, existing extradition and mutual legal assistance treaties, in favor of swift, 'modern justice' the US Atty. Gen. Ashcroft way.

But do write your US Senators, Congressmen or your members of various EU national parliaments. Send an e-mail to the White House too.
