* COMMENT: What You Think.
Dear A-Letter Reader:
Well, we asked for your opinions and we got them. This humble A-Letter editor has been deluged with comments in the last few days, a result of my editorial whining about lack of reader response. (By the way, the latest figures show you are one of just under 50,000 readers).
If any generalization emerges from your many comments it is a very deep concern about the future of freedom and liberty in the US and in other nations as well. Typical is Roger, who thinks "our liberties are fading away by what appears to be a dictator government."
The arrival of your comments coincided with a spate of news articles and reports about the sad state of civil liberties, one year after September 11th. (See LINKS below). In the US, Canada, the UK and other nations,people are beginning to wake up to the fact that they were hoodwinked into accepting a police state in exchange for the illusion of security.
Many of the new restrictions on personal freedom were proposed and rejected repeatedly before. Only after the terror attacks did these unwanted nostrums get approval, often without any serious debate or examination, as in the case of the highly repressive USA Patriot Act.
There is a great irony in this wholesale surrender of liberty. Mr. GE wrote: "Bin Laden must be very happy...knock down a couple buildings and then watch American political stupidity eviscerate the the one thing that makes America worth living in - [freedom]." But DDS told us: "The jackboots don't particularly scare me anymore, but my first choice is not to have them visit."
Others are waiting for the knock on the door. JA thinks: "I'm sure we will soon be living in a police state where everything we say or do is listened to or read by those with no business doing so...in the name of security it will all be justified." HJ in Canada told us: "I'm glad I lived most of what will be my life span before we became quite so constrained." At the age of 82, WS says: "I see the total demise of the US."
Some of our readers are thinking of expatriation. DLB muses: "I sometimes wonder if it's time to bail out of the US and 'hide & watch' from a safer and cheaper location." But JW has all but given up: "I'm looking around for a rock to crawl under. I sadly conclude it's too late to repair the US."
But all the gloom was accompanied by many pleasing compliments. As RW told us: "Thank you for great reporting at a critical time in world history." That makes our work worthwhile.
That's the way that it looks from here.
