* COMMENT: Worthless Paper?
Dear A-Letter Reader:
I suffer from many incipient disabilities; advancing age, impatience with fools, innate conservatism, lower back pain, being an ex-politician congressman and - that all purpose American hate object - four decades as an attorney. (Just reading that list made me feel a bit queasy).
But one of my pet peeves is the unqualified ignorance of Americans in general about our laws, the US Constitution and the rights and freedoms these documents guarantee in theory, if not always in practice.
This was brought home to me yesterday morning as I watched CNN and saw Pres. Bush extolling the virtues of the study of American history in a Rose Garden TV/photo op designed to celebrate US Constitution Day, the 215 anniversary of the framers signing their names to our Constitution.
Because I was trained very well by the Jesuits at Georgetown University Law Center many years ago, I tend to forget how woefully unfamiliar mostAmericans seem to be these days about the importance of the rule of law.
I would not buy a house, rent an apartment, enter into an employment contract or open an account without reading the documents that govern such transactions. Before I act, I want to know what my rights are.
Yet the basic contract which governs our lives as US citizens, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, together with Amendments, is a mystery to most people.
The so-called "War on Terror" has brought home this ignorance, as poll majorities have endorsed unconstitutional police state tactics in exchange for false promises of security.
So educate yourself, if need be. Read, study and come to understand our history and the basic documents that should govern our lives. If we don't appreciate what they mean and demand the exercise of our rights, then truly, these charters of liberty will be worthless.
That's the way that it looks from here.
