· COMMENT: Privacy Means No Windows XP
Multi-millions of personal computers use a Microsoft operating system (OS) such as Windows 95/98/2000 or the newest Windows product, XP. If don't have XP, don't get it. If your PC has Windows XP, uninstall it and get a different operating system. Here's why:
Windows made Bill Gates the world's richest man because his OS makes using PCs easy. Your PC runs without you having to be a computer expert. Unfortunately, this easy use allows lots of mischief without you, the user, being aware of what's happening inside Windows.
Many famous cyber-security crises and viruses that made news, plus thousands of others that didn't, have wreaked billions of dollars of damage because of security 'holes' in Microsoft operating systems. As holes are discovered, Microsoft issues 'patches' users are supposed to install as fixes.
Installing a Windows patch requires the user to agree to an 'end user licensing agreement' (EULA) filled with legal gibberish. If you're one of the few people who read the EULA for Windows XP you know that Microsoft is given power automatically to download future fixes or upgrades to your OS, including secret code that could violate US and state privacy laws.
For these reasons, and because I value my privacy, I refuse to use any version of Windows operating systems above 98 or other Microsoft software above 2000. I also refuse all updates to my software (not just Microsoft) unless I'm convinced they don't pose privacy and security risks greater than the problem that supposedly is being fixed.
That's the way it looks from here.
