* COMMENT: Support Washington's Mideast Foreign Policy (George Washington's, That Is)

By Ron Holland

"The great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign nations is, in extending our commercial relations to have with them as little political connections as possible. It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances, with any portion of the foreign world". --George Washington

Dear A-Letter Reader,

America has forgotten the sound foreign policy advice given by our first president, George Washington.

With trillions spent on defense, our government is unable to defend America from a rag tag group of Islamic militants who may have nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. Our rulers tell us that we must wait for the next attack. And that we must accept the loss of civil liberties to fight an ill-defined "War on Terror."

Why are Islamic extremists targeting America? It is because they view the United States as taking sides in the Middle East. As we prepare for war against Iraq, that perception will inevitably become stronger.

With the collapse of the Soviet Empire, there is no cold war power struggle going on in the Middle East. So, why are we there? Israel, our primary ally in the region, will continue to exist as long as the Israeli people have the will to defend themselves and the Arabs will sell their oil until it runs out.

George Washington's wise advice was free trade with all nations and political alliances with none. That advice is just as relevant today as it was 200 years ago.

That's the way that it looks from here.

Ron Holland,
Asheville, North Carolina
