COMMENT: California Chaos?
Dear A-Letter Reader:
I am writing today's A-Letter from San Franciso, California where I am speaking at the annual Agora Wealth Symposium. For the past week I have traveled across the state, from Palm Springs to Los Angeles to the Bay area.
As the world has discovered, the Golden State is in the midst of an unprecedented recall of its highly unpopular governor, Grey Davis, a Democrat big spending liberal. And, in the state that made Ronald Reagan governor, and then president, the true front-runner to succeed David is none other than that Austrian expatriate,Arnold "I'll Be Back" Schwarzennegger, the action hero actor and former body builder.
As I have traveled around California, I have casually asked people who they might for and they are nearly unanimous in wanting Gov. Davis out. But to my mild surprise, most people seem to support Arnold as his replacement.
That a grass roots popular revolt could overthrow the California political establishment has come as a shock to the state's elites. But from talking with many people over the last few days I sense a massive frustration with failed government, high taxes, and political incompetents.
It is rumored that Arnold has a broad libertarian streak, with minimal government being his goal. That he wants to sweep clean the state of special interests and influence peddlers has struck a responsive cord in Californians hungry for leadership.
The saying used to be that California was the trendsetter for America. So if they send a libertarian to Sacramento, can Washington be far behind?
That's the way that it looks from here in Califronia.
