COMMENT: Liberty vs. Security.
Dear A-Letter Reader:
* If your name is David Nelson and you plan to fly anywhere, expect to be pulled aside by airport security and questioned closely. That's because someone named "David Nelson" is on a secret government list of possible terrorists.
* If you try to open a new bank or investment account and your address has changed recently, you may be flatly refused because you are a suspect.
* If your foreign sounding name is similar to one that appears on another secret government list sent to financial institutions, you may never get bank funds wired to you.
* Your home or office and your computers may be searched in secret by the FBI and you'll never know it.
* If you check out a library book on Middle Eastern religion, you may be reported to the FBI.
All these questionable government actions are kept secret because the law that makes them possible, the so-called PATRIOT Act, also allows the FBI and other government police to hide what they are doing.
If you want to know what is really going on in Pres. Bush's War on Terror, read "Terrorism and Tyranny: Trampling Freedom, Justice, and Peace to Rid the World of Evil," by James Bovard.
American liberty is under attack, not by terrorists, but by the US government. The US Dept. of Justice's authority was granted in a 342 page law introduced by the Bush administration days after 9-11, passed sight unseen by Congress and signed into law 6 weeks later.
And only now are civil libertarians focusing on the massive destruction of financial privacy the Act allows under the guise of "anti-money laundering." Initial costs for banks to enforce new rules beginning on Oct. 1 is at least $700 million, all of which customers will have to pay.
But the far greater cost is in lost freedom. Small wonder that hundreds of communities have passed resolutions asking for curbs on the Act's most onerous provisions; "sneak-and-peek" search warrants, wiretaps, Internet surveillance and library record inspections.
As columnist Charlie Reese notes: "Absolute protection against terrorist attacks is an illusion. To swap liberty for promised security is to fall victim to a con game. You will lose your liberty for sure, but you will not gain the promised protection from terrorism."
That's the way that it looks from here.
